The Montagu Whalers were used in the Royal Navy as lifeboats and service vessels. They were a variation, based on the design suggestions of Admiral Victor Alexander Montagu, on traditional whale boats that had been used in the service. The Montagu Whaler is clinker built. It typically had five oarlocks, two on one side and three on the other, as well as a ketch rig for sailing.
